Summary:
One of the first San-Serif text used in a body of a book was in German and the first iron printing-press was made by Earl Stanhope, in 1800. The industrial revolution had a big impact towards the printing press and design in general. Fredrerich Koenig invented the first double cylinder steam powered press in 1814. Instead of using man power, machinery began taking over = cheaper and faster.
**Lead-ites were folk who refused to accept machinery. (Example: a person who refuses to submit to the machines -- cellphones, iPads, iPods etc)
Newspapers: There were subscription newspaper and penny-papers. Subscriptions were used to gear towards specific groups of people whereas the penny-papers were sold on the street and gear towards everyone.
Ottmar Mergenthaller -- perfected his linotype machine in 1886. The machine could do the work of 7-8 hand composers and led to a surge in production, and lower costs of books, and of course new
papers. The age of mass communication had arrived! (word)
Personal Thoughts:
AHHHHAHAHAHAHAHHAH THE POOR LINOTYPE! *cries*
Questions:
1. What are the average of fingers people have lost throughout their "linotyping" time?2. more questions to come...
